Isle
Of Wight August 26 - 31, 1970 (UK)
What, when, where...
The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival was held on August 26 - 31,
1970. It was held on Afton Down an area on the Western side of the Isle
Of Wight (UK). It was the last of three consecutive music festivals to
take place on the Isle Of Wight in between 1968 and 1970. It is widely
acknowledged
as the largest music festival ever, greater than the attendance of Live
Aid, Woodstock and Rock In Rio. The Guinness Book Of Records has cited
its attendance as 600,000, this is just above the organisers' estimate
of 500,000.

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The
Watchtower
(Live at the Isle Of Wight 1970)
Jimi Hendrix - This video captures legendary
guitarist Jimi Hendrix at his finest and most riveting - just 18 days
before his death. One
August 31, 1970,
Hendrix gave a concert at East Afton Farm at the Isle of Wight. It was
the last of a series of shows, and Hendrix rocked the
house for hours, playing "All Along the Watchtower," "In
From the Storm" and "Voodoo Chile" - along with many other
of his hit songs.
Live set list: "Message to Love" / "God Save
the Queen" / "Sgt.
Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" / "Spanish Castle Magic" / "All
Along the Watch Tower" / "Voodoo Chile" / "Freedom" / "Machine
Gun" / "Dolly Dagger" / "Red House" / "In
from the Storm"
The Who - My Generation
(Live
at the Isle Of Wight 1970)
Free - Free were an English rock band,
formed in London in 1968 and best known for their popular song "All
Right Now".
Lead singer Paul Rodgers went on to become lead singer of the rock band
Bad Company along with Simon Kirke on drums. Lead guitarist Paul Kossoff,
a much revered blues-rock guitarist, died from a drug-induced heart
failure at the age of 25 in 1976. The band was famed for its sensational
live
shows and nonstop touring. However, early studio albums sold slowly
- until the release of "Fire and Water" which featured the
massive hit "All
Right Now". This song helped secure them a place at the huge Isle
of Wight Festival 1970 where they played to 600,000 people.
Live set list: "Ride on a Pony" / "Woman" / "The Stealer" / "Be My
Friend" / "Mr. Big" / "Fire and Water" / "I'm a Mover" / "The Hunter"
/ "All Right Now"
/ "Crossroads"
Rory Gallagher (Taste) - Gambling
Blues
(Live
at the Isle Of Wight 1970)
Rory Gallagher (Taste) - The
festival at the Isle of Wight was to Europe what Woodstock was to the
USA. Many problems came about as more rock
fans
than tickets available came to this usually peaceful island just off
the coast of Portsmouth, England. The festival was held at East Afton
farm in Freshwater, on the 13 by 23 mile island off the coast of Southern
England. This was considered the last monster tribal gathering - the
five-day 1970 Isle of Wight Festival - where 600,000 mostly stoned flower
children turned ugly in obnoxious displays of hippie self-righteousness." Many
of the biggest rock stars of the time appeared at this festival including
The Who, Free, Donovan, Ten Years After, The Moody Blues, Joni Mitchell,
Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen and Jethro Tull, and ELP. Jimi Hendrix and Jim
Morrison of the Doors made their last live stage appearance here.
Taste (with Rory Gallagher) played through the madness of this giant
concert where those who did not have tickets rushed and crashed the gates.
'Taste
Live
at the Isle of Wight' has some wonderful songs by Rory Gallagher
and a cover for blues star Broonzy in "I Feel So Good."
Live set list: "What's Going On / Sugar Mama / Morning Sun
/ Sinner Boy / I Feel So Good / Catfish / Gambling Blues
