Super-String-Theory
The guitarist of Super-String-Theory is Aaron Roten. Aaron
has been playing guitar for seventeen years and his constant pursuit of musical
knowledge has guided his interests in many musical directions. Aaron's Grandmother
was the first person to put a guitar in his hands. From there, the seeds of
addiction to the instrument were planted.
It wasn't until he was seventeen years old that he picked up
the dusty guitar that lurked under the bed and tried to actually play the thing.
Fixated on heavy metal like Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Judas Priest, Aaron's
playing focused on heavy power chord abuse. Eventually, interest peaked with
bands like Forbidden, Violence, Fates Warning, and Watchtower, causing his playing
to lean in a more technical direction.
Around 1990, Aaron sought local guitar hero, David Mark, for
lessons. Lessons with David proved positive and much music theory and tons of
technique were covered over the following three years.
At this point, Aaron began teaching the instrument at a local
store. Simultaneously, Aaron played in a speed metal band, Injection Temple,
as well as attending College at SMSU studying Art and Music. At SMSU, Aaron
started studying with Joe Lieter, a classical and fusion player. With Joe, many
advanced musical concepts were explored, usually through a jazz style approach
to harmony. During this time, progressive rock like Rush and Dream Theater;
Jazz/Fusion like Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Frank Gambale, and Pat Methaney;
and guitar virtuoso stuff like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Greg Howe, Tony MacAlpine,
and Marty Feidman became the listening preference.
In 2000 Super-String-Theory was formed. The group started playing
shows around the Springfield, Missouri area and gaining a loyal following opening
for acts such as King's X, Eric Sardinas, and Bobby Rock. Aaron took a new teaching
position at Palen Music Company, teaching guitar and bass.
In 2003, the band recorded and released "Swimming in the
Dutch Mordant", a 65 minute disc that featured a variety of musical styles.
SST continued playing shows locally and writing new music.
Aaron began writing material for the new SST CD, Principles
of Transformation, which will be released tentatively in March of 2006. The
new release is quite an ambitious one, containing elements of melodic rock guitar,
fusion, metal, jazz and a "white mid-western guy playing flamenco style".
Aaron's current list of influences include the likes of Mattias
IA Eklunhd, Bumblefoot, Neil Zaza, and of course, Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
Aaron continually studies various styles of world music, jazz, and the never
ending pursuit of rock and roll acrobatic guitar abuse.
