Future Music
Interview by Zachary Williams

Interviewer: Hello Future Music! So tell me who future music is?

Future Music: Rob Barsky (me) & Rich Arbaugh in the studio, we play all parts... when we do live, several other friends back us up.

Interviewer: So you know a lot of people? Do a lot of people know you? Fan wise?

Future Music: Well, we've been around since 1985... we have a rather loyal following... and Myspace had opened up the possibility of being heard world wide. We've made over 23,000 friends in about 11 months... all this was science fiction when I started the band in 1985... there was No Internet! So, Future Music heads into the future like everyone else... learning as we go.

Interviewer: Is that how you got your title?

Future Music: In the summer of 1985 I sat and watched the Live Aid Concert. It was the first event in many years that really captured the spirit of Woodstock. I found that quite exciting. That night I wrote a song called 'Future Music'. It was about the power of music and how it could be a positive influence on the future. The song eventually became our name.

Interviewer: So that's why you guys do inspirational songs?

Future Music: Well, to me it's important to have a balance between inspirational / raise awareness songs and just having some good old rock & roll fun. I think each album needs to make a statement, help to raise awareness of current issues. If I can do that, then I feel like I can "treat" myself to just some pure fun songs.

Interviewer: What's your favorite song you do?

Future Music: Hahaha, well songs are like your children, you love them equally. But if I had to, I'd pick "Katrina"... it did the most good, raised awareness and a lot of donations... and it was inspired by my daughter, who flew to New Orleans shortly after the hurricane as part of her work in disaster research, so that makes it quite special to me on a personal level.

Interviewer: As where coming to a close; what advice would you give to people aspiring to start a band or in a band wanting to become more popular?

Future Music: I always ask young musicians, 'if you knew right now, that you'd never be famous or rich, would you still do your music?". So my advise is, ask yourself that question and if you realize that you're doing your music for the love of it, then the music will be it's own reward.

Interviewer: Where you asked that?

Future Music: Good question!!!! In a way... but not musically... I LOVED playing baseball growing up. A little league coach asked me something quite similar, always kept it in mind.

Interviewer: As our final questions, can you relate sports and singing? Where you ever involved in anything else musically as a kid? School choirs, church choirs, a band with friends, theater, etc?

Future Music: I've formed a few bands over the years, starting in 1965... all with friends, but was never involved in any other organized music. Hmmm... sports & bands... well, both require team work, both involve doing something just for the love of it (at least in the beginning). And to be successful, both require giving it your best shot, leaving nothing on the playing field, except your finest effort.
