Sziget 2009 - Festival breaks new
records
The five days of the Sziget festival and the day minus one
Takcsapda concert attracted 390.000 visitors, 5.000 more than the previous
year, which in turn
was a record braking year itself.
On the day of ‘Fátnómore' 68.000 people were humming
in the culture disco, breaking yet again the previous year's record attendance,
Sziget Festival closed with 390.000 visitors and in the black.
The organisers did not include the audience of the day zero mega-gig, Music
Against Racism in the final count - as they didn’t include the
audience of last year's Hungarian Music Day either - as they were
going to donate the proceeds of the day to the fight against racism. Unfortunately
the concert did not only produce no profit, it actually lost money. Regardless
of financial considerations, the organisers believe that it was a worthwhile
effort for a deserving cause.
"How come there is virtually no dust at Sziget?" - asked a
reporter from the Dutch national radio one of his Hungarian colleagues and added
that
he had never been to a festival with such a friendly atmosphere before.
The drummer from Placebo was also enchanted by Sziget. He arrived to Budapest
days before their concert, and talks of the city as well as the festival only
in superlatives. He attended a lot of concerts and said it felt amazing to
take part in the festival as an average festivalgoer.
Pendulum's frontman left Sziget with a positive experience too. He lost
his mobile on the day of their concert, which is not that great an experience,
but one of the festival's photographers found the dead phone. He charged
it, and found out via the text messages which band it belonged to, but by the
time he could have contacted the owner, the singer was already at the airport
ready to board the plane. The determined photographer got into a taxi and managed
to catch the band before they left, and the frontman couldn't have been
more grateful.
Fatboy Slim asked for egg barley, and left with two bags of the pasta specialty,
as well as a Hungarian national football shirt, which he had long desired.
By now even Prodigy knows what 'prodidzsáj' is: members
of the band have watched this year's very popular Sziget TV spot, without
understanding a word of course, but once it was explained to them they were
very amused by the antics of 'Sziget Lacika'.
The Arcadom Wall, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin
Wall was also very popular. One side of the 50m long, 2m high wall was decorated
by 6 Hungarian and 5 international street artists. The international artists
included Czech, Ukrainian, Slovakian and French artists, for example the world
famous French Honet has left his mark on the wall too. The other side of the
wall was decorated by the festivalgoers, on average 50 people were working
on the wall every day.
Sziget has successfully set a unique world record. A 70sqm mandala was created
by nearly 500 participants from 14 different countries.
The Sziget Festival has received the Green Festival prize for its environmentally
conscious organisation, which was presented to Károly Gerendai by Imre
Szabó minister for the environment. The criteria for winning the prize
was set by experts, and Sziget has successfully met the rigorous requirements,
highlighted the minister in his speech.
On the last day of Sziget, following the concert by Faith No More, the dismantling
of the Main Stage has already begun. Dismantling the festival and clean up
takes two weeks, after which gardening reconstruction can begin.
